#5 The Herrnhuter Stern

Germany certainly knows how to do Christmas decorations. While it’s exciting to begin our own collection, the price tag can put a dampener on the ornament shopping, particularly if the objects in question come from that hallowed address, the Erzgebirge. So far we’ve treated ourselves to just one; a Herrnhuter stern. As the story goes, Herrnhut was founded when a group of refugees from Bohemia and Moravia were given shelter by a German Count, Zinzendorf. The stars were made by the Moravian Church and became associated with Advent. Each one has twenty-five points – seventeen square and eight triangular. At the moment they can be seen in streets, shops and windows at every turn. Certainly makes for an interesting comparison with the luminous excesses of suburban Sydney!

ps Happy 5th wedding anniversary to my wonderful husband. Who would have thought (on that hot summer’s day) that we’d celebrate it in the snow?

Remembering the champagne and fruit midst hairspray, makeup, Christmas tree, airconditioner… and laughter….then Wollongong and all your church friends before on to the magical white and blue sprays of flowers, music, lights encircling the marquee as the sun set over the valley and the welcome reprieve of night temperatures. All such fond memories, Ally….and, yes, what contrast. It’s certainly making for a rich fabric of life and future memories. Lots of love to you both, and, of course, to Rose…so much a part of our last Christmas. Gazing at those photos…so much has happened in just one year. Love, Jill
